The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline will be designed to carry natural gas from the three main fields discovered by the Producer Group Companies -- Taglu, Parsons Lake and Niglintgak. Many other companies who are exploring for natural gas in the Mackenzie Delta and other areas along the Mackenzie Valley will also have the opportunity to move their natural gas through the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline system.

Natural gas production that is greater than the initial capacity could be shipped in the future by adding more compression facilities or by putting another pipeline in the ground beside the first pipeline. Adding a second pipeline is called "looping the line".
